The SCR technology and AdBlue, how does it work ?
The euro norms are getting more and more drastic regarding the nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx). One of the most developed solutions by truck manufacturers is the SCR technology or Selective Catalytic Reduction. Renault Trucks, Scania, Volvo, Mercedes, Iveco, MAN, all makes use the SCR technology for their lastest trucks.

The SCR technology and AdBlue
The SCR technology can reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions of a truck by 85% by transforming the harmful exhaust gas into nitrogen and water vapour. For that, the system needs to inject between 3 and 5% of a chemical solution called AdBlue and made of urea and de-mineralised water to the truck’s fuel. The main components of the SCR system are the SCR catalyst, the AdBlue injection unit, the AdBlue tank and the AdBlue dosing control unit.
Where to find AdBlue?
The AdBlue quality is very important, impurities added to the chemical solution could reduce or destroy the efficacity of the SCR catalyst on the NOx reduction. The AdBlue tank should only contain the chemical solution. The AdBlue is available in lots of filling stations. Some websites, such as “FindAdBlue” offer geographical positioning of the AdBlue distributors across France.
