The Volvo FH will become your virtual co-driver
This new technology evaluates the truck's enviromnent and tells the driver what he should do to avoid accidents with pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles. A data platform analyses the sensory information saved by the cameras, radars and captors placed on the truck.
Every 25 milliseconds, the Volvo FH, can analyse what is happening around it, with a 360° coverage. The system detects threats, different road users, their distance, the way they go and gives alternative courses of action. If the driver doesn't react, the auto steering and braking system takes over.
" This technology can foresee traffic scenarios up to 5 seconds prior, depending on the speed of the other vehicles and pedestrians, and creates the best action plan" says Mansour Keshavarz, systems engineer at Volvo Trucks.
Commercial launch in 5 to 10 years
At the moment, the system is only being tested. Volvo Trucks doesn't think that this technology is ready to be used in a commercial safety system yet.
"We have the main components in place, but we need to do a lot more testing in order to make sure that the system is fault-free," says Carl Johan Almqvist.
