Scania unveils their new hybrid truck, the P320, designed for urban use and meeting the Euro 6 requirement norms.

The Swedish truck  manufacturer just unveiled the P320, a hybrid truck combining a thermal engine that can use biofuels and an electric engine. Silent and low polluting, the new Scania truck is designed to drive by night or in city.

Hybridisation and renewable energies : the keys for a clean and economical driving

The Scania P320 is equipped with the 9-liter, 5-cylinder in line Scania engine of 320 hp, that can be used with diesel, FAME biodiesel or hydrotreated vegetable oil. When the engine exclusively uses hydrotreated vegetable oil, the reduction of CO2 emissions reaches 92%. The P320 is the first Euro 6 hybrid truck that can use renewable fuels, which reduces the fuel consumption by 18% in urban area. The additional costs of the hybrid system are compensated by the significative fuel reduction.

A silent truck for night rides and sensible areas

In addition to its thermal engine, the P320 has an electric engine of 130 kW (174 hp) for a 1.050 rpm torque. This engine is installed between the thermal engine and the Scania E-GRS895 automatic transmission, equipped with the 2-pedal Scania Opticruise system. The truck can be 100% electric, which allows a silent drive, good for night rides as well as in urban areas. The sound level, below 72 dB, respects the Quiet truck/PIEK Light european standard for sensible areas.

The Scania P320 is equipped with a battery with a capacity of up to 1,2 kWh. The loading and unloading are limited, which increases its lifespan. All the additional electric components are regrouped in hybrid power module including the battery, the command system, the cooling system and the voltage converter. This module is protected against collisions. The hybrid system represents an additional weight of 790 kg.

The braking power recycling recharges the battery

The driver is helped bu the Scania Driver Support feature available on the dashboard. It helps to adapt the drving, especially to regulate its braking : the braking power is used to recharge the battery. It represents the two-thirds of fuel savings by hybridisation. The engine stops at low speed, and an effective use of the auxiliary electric system contributing to the fuel reduction. The auxiliary electric system of 24 V is powered by the 650 V of the hybrid engine. The truck can only use electricity up to 45 km/h.

The first truck will be delievered in 2016. The P320 is available with 4x2, 6x2 or 6x2*4 configurations, with a P or G cab.
