The « European Solar Prize 2015 » has been awarded to the electric buses by Volvo Buses from Gothenburg, Sweden
The « European Solar Prize» award, given out each year to projects in Europe in several fields of activity. This year, the 55 electric bus route (ElectriCity) in Gothenburg has been awarded the European Solar Prize 2015.
This prize is awarded to European sustainability projects in a number of different areas by Eurosolar (European Association for Renewable Energy) in Bonn. The Volvo bus line from the ElectriCity project was awarded the price in the Transport and Mobility category.
100% electric Volvo Buses
These electric and ecological buses only use hydraulic energy as well as energy made by wind turbine. The ElectriCity project tests 100% electric transportation means but also tries out lots of other innovations for cities in the future.
The line goes between Lindholm and Chalmess/Johanneberf in Gothenburg. It is made of three electric buses and seven hybrid buses. These Volvo buses have a capacity of up to 86 passengers and use 80% less energy than classic buses. They have batteries that can be reloaded at the end of the line. The Volvo buses are still being tested, the production is set for 2017.
Silent and ecological, the intercity buses of Göteborg also offer other services for users. Indeed, the Volvo electric buses have the Wifi and electrical outlets for passengers to charge their phone or computer batteries.
The Volvo bus on the 55 line : rewarded for their silent aspect
This year, the buses on the 55 Volvo Buses line are ready for Christmas and displays their silent aspect in a very original way. Indeed, Gothenburg decided to have concerts in the electric buses to prove how silent the engine is. Thus, Helena Lind, Manager Media Relations at Volvo Buses, explains that the buses on line 55 can replace traditional city noises such as horns by pleasant noises such as Christmas songs.
