Meeting the increasing need for new generation trucks using alternative fuels, Scania just launched a new gas engine that is ecological, economical and efficient.

LNG and CNG tanks

The engine offers tow tank solutions : compressed natural gas (CNG) tank or for liquid natural gas (LNG). « In terms of combustion, it doesn't matter if it is CNG or LNG », says Folke Fritzson head engineer at Scania R&D, who helped developped these engines. Nevertheless, he adds, when the CNG  allows you to go 500km, the LNG offers 1100km of autonomy. These performances make the Scania OC13 a perfect engine for long distance transports as well as urban delivery, gas engine being known to be silent.

An engine made for long distance haulage

This 13-liter block with 400hp has interesting characteristics in comparison to the 13-liter Scania engine it is inspired from. Indeed, not only it ensures a complete combustion of the fuel and the oxygen but it is also combined with the Scania Opticruise, the automated gearbox by Scania, which will add driving comfort. « When developping the engine, one of the main goal was to ensure the better driving experience possible so that the performances and characteristics match those of a modern diesel engine », explains Folke Fritzson.

Equipped with 6 cylinders, this new gas engine has been developped so that long-distance drivers can drive longer before maintenance, that is 45.000km instead of 30.000km with the previous gas engines.
