Unusual transport: a Triceratops skull travels between Italy and the USA

An unusual package was recently delivered to a gallery in Dallas (USA). It was, in fact, a Triceratops skull handled by the company ZOIC, which specializes in the restoration and reconstruction of fossils.

A historical treasure reconstructed in Italy

More than 65 million years old, this dinosaur skull, with impressive dimensions (80 × 120 × 185 cm) and weighing 318 kg, was discovered in South Dakota (USA), in the heart of the famous Hell Creek Formation. It was then sent to Trieste (Italy) to be taken care of by ZOIC’s teams. In a first phase, the Italian company carefully checked the origin of the fossil. Its provenance, the geological context, and all accompanying documentation were thoroughly verified. Once these precautions had been taken, restoration work could begin. With great precision, each fragment was extracted, consolidated, and then positioned to form a three-dimensional reconstruction of the skull.

Complex logistics for the return to the USA

Once the restoration was completed, the Cretaceous fossil had to return to the USA in one single piece, in compliance with current international standards and regulations. This delicate mission was entrusted to the company Rhenus, a long-standing partner of ZOIC. This exceptional piece traveled in a custom-made package composed of specific materials and equipped with high-performance shock-absorbing systems.

The transfer began with the collection of the fossil in Trieste, after which it was transported by road to Milan Malpensa Airport. It then flew to Dallas on a cargo flight before reaching its final destination.
