Volvo Trucks unveils 13L multi-fuel engine platform

Starting in the third quarter of 2026, Volvo Trucks will launch two new 13-litre engines, the D13 diesel and the G13 gas, developed entirely in-house on a common platform. Compatible with HVO, B100 biodiesel, bio-LNG and green hydrogen, these powertrains offer fuel consumption reductions of up to 4% compared to the models they replace. Available on the FM, FMX, FH and FH Aero, they will be rolled out first in Europe, Morocco, Turkey and India.

A completely redesigned architecture

The new platform features novel cylinder and turbo designs, a reinforced engine brake and an updated version of the I-Shift transmission. The D13 covers a range of 380 to 560 hp with torque of 1,800 to 2,900 Nm; the G13 delivers 420 to 500 hp and torque of 2,400 to 2,800 Nm. Both engines comply with Euro 6 and meet NNR3 (New Noise Regulation Phase 3) requirements, anticipating upcoming acoustic and emissions regulations.

I-Roll & efficiency

Many D13 variants are compatible with the I-Roll system, whose stop/start function cuts the engine during downhill sections to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The stated 4% saving is based on simulation of a Volvo FH 42T, 500 hp, 35t GVW, combining the D13 with I-See and I-Roll systems, compared to the standard D13 eSCR under representative European driving conditions. These gains are in addition to the 5% already achieved by the Volvo Aero range since its launch in early 2024.

Global rollout and net-zero trajectory

Compatibility with B100 biodiesel, HVO, bio-LNG and green hydrogen positions these powertrains at the heart of Volvo Trucks' three-pronged technology strategy: battery electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles and combustion engines running on renewable fuels. Head of Product Jan Hjelmgren highlights that this flexibility makes it possible to offer vehicles "with the possibility of achieving net-zero emissions" across the entire global network. The target is set for 2040. Engine production will be handled in Skövde, Sweden; vehicle assembly will be split between Tuve (Sweden) and Ghent (Belgium). The rollout will subsequently extend to North America, Latin America, Asia and Africa.
