Based on the 16 tons Renault Midlum DXi 5, the Urban Lab 1 is expected to revolutionize the urban distribution. Its ground-breaking suspension system enables the truck to lower itself to ground level, thus facilitating loading and unloading operations. For the time being, the Urban Lab 1 remains an experimental model.

A hybrid truck designed for city life

The Urban Lab 1 truck designed by Renault Trucks can operate in all-electric mode in towns, which allows it to keep noise level to a minimum. The lowering of a loading sill at ground level should enable to cut down the delivery time by one-third. Shorter unloading time means less traffic congestion, which will undoubtedly be greatly appreciated by city dwellers!

Renault and bodybuilder Gemco E-Trucks B.V behind the new Urban Lab 1

This new Urban Lab 1, based on the 16 tons Renault Midlum DXi 5, is driven by 2 wheel motors in the rear wheels. The vehicle is also equipped with a diesel engine. Its payload can vary from 8 to 9 t.

The joint efforts of Renault Trucks and bodybuilder Gemco E-Trucks B.V made it possible for this experimental system of loading sill at ground level to see the light of day. A major concern for the truck manufacturer is the development of new solutions for future urban goods distribution. The commercialisation of the new truck is not on the agenda, but it is obvious that the Urban Lab 1 by Renault Trucks has a promising future.
